Help St. Croix recover.

Cane Bay Cares about St. Croix

The Cane Bay Cares initiative is Cane Bay Partners VI LLLP's response to the devastation that two hurricanes wrought on St. Croix – the company’s home island – in September.

Cane Bay Cares is a $1 million fundraising campaign aimed at providing direct relief to Cane Bay Partner's employees and to the citizens of St. Croix to help them quickly begin to rebuild their lives.

The initiative originally was created in partnership with the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands, a longstanding local 501c3 nonprofit, and is now working with St. Croix Foundation on the long-term revitalization effort, so donations to Cane Bay Cares are 100 percent tax-deductible.

Cane Bay Partners VI, LLP Co-Founders David A. Johnson and Kirk Chewning

Cane Bay Cares is the brainchild of St. Croix- based Cane Bay Partners VI, LLLP Co-Founders David A. Johnson and Kirk Chewning, who are leading the campaign.

“Your urgent help is needed. St. Croix and the U.S. Virgin Islands have been devastated from two strong hurricanes. The people are suffering and there is much work to do in order rebuild the island,” Johnson said. “In order to help, Cane Bay Cares is proud to announce that we have partnered with Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands to launch a $1 million dollar fundraising campaign to benefit St. Croix!”

The idea is to jump-start the restoration effort.

“We are deeply saddened by the destruction of our community and want to help quickly start the rebuilding process,” Chewning said.

To further energize the effort, Johnson and Chewning have pledged to donate $100,000 each in matching funds, meaning they will match donations dollar for dollar, for the first $200,000 that is donated.

The goal is to raise $1 million overall.

Hurricanes impact on St. Croix, St. Thomas and St. John

On Sept. 6, Hurricane Irma descended on the U.S. Virgin Islands as a Category 5 hurricane, wreaking havoc with 185 mph winds and leaving a trail of destruction on St. Thomas and St. John. St. Croix, 40 miles to the south, was spared Irma’s full force, enabling a fairly quick response for Crucians to assist their sister islands.

Several Cane Bay Partners VI employees and both Johnson and Chewning assisted in the civilian relief efforts for their sister islands, donating supplies, support and money. Johnson even donated the use of his boat, Turn and Burn, a 40-foot center console fishing boat, for ferrying supplies to those in need on St. Thomas and St. John.

Then came Maria.

Hurricane Maria was a powerful Category 5 storm when its eye passed just south of St. Croix, its winds and rain and storm surge battering the island from Sept. 19 to 20, downing power lines, tearing roofs from homes, and destroying infrastructure.

Now, the island that had been helping its sister islands recover from Irma needs a helping hand itself.

Cane Bay Cares is a service initiative of St. Croix-based Cane Bay Partners VI, LLLP. Cane Bay Cares was established after three strong hurricanes, including two Category 5 storms, Irma and Maria, caused much damage to St. Croix during September 2017. The initiative has a goal of providing relief to the citizens of St. Croix. To make this possible, we have partnered with St. Croix Foundation, which is a 501c3 nonprofit that was established in 1990. All donations to Cane Bay Cares are donations to St. Croix Foundation and are 100% tax deductible.

Cane Bay Partners VI, LLLP was formed in June 2009 and founded by internationally experienced business executives with many years of experience in the financial services industry. Focusing our efforts primarily in the financial services industry, our management consulting practice specializes in providing services to clients in need of sophisticated risk management models, debt collections organizations which require liquidation models and analytics, and portfolio management companies desiring a variety of services.
